Technologies used

We used a lot of technologies to create our media pieces which we wouldn't of been able to do without these.

We used Celtx to create our script and schedule and also our character and props list. This helped keep us as a group organised and on schedule. We wouldn't have got a lot done without it.
We used Final Cut Pro to edit our footage together, this allowed us to make our film because we can't afford to use the high-tec technology, this allowed us to create a high quality film with this software.
We used Garage Band to create music for our film on which we could put on our film without needed copy write permission, this also allowed us to experiment with different sounds to make the music for our film
Google allowed us to search clips, information, and pictures and much more for our research and planning. Without Google we wouldn't of found out half the things we did using Google.

In IMovie we created our extras which was quite fun watching all our outtakes from our film, its also an easier way to edit footage.

In Photoshop I edited our poster and made all the brick wall, pavement and lower wall black and white and kept the bushes and characters in colour. This was a decision we made because it made our title stand out a lot more and also our quote and characters names.

Final Poster

We had to change our poster again because the names of the characters blended in with the black and white wall so we needed to make some changes

Here is the first option we came up with:

We then decided we didn't like the yellow because it took away the harshness it and it made it look a bit like a cartoon. We then chose the writing to be in red because it kept the harsh tone of the poster and the message we wanted to get across to the audience.

Audience Questionnaire

We wrote a questionnaire to get some audience feedback on our film to see what they liked and disliked, what characters they sympathized with and which ones they hated. This also gave us a chance to change some things that the audience didn't like or what they felt didn't work

Here is our audience questionnaire

Final Draft of our Magazine Article

Due to the fact that we changed the font colour in our poster we had to make changes to our magazine as well here is what our magazine looked like for our third draft

Here is what our final magazine article looks like now...

Our Fourth Poster

We have made some slight changes to our poster just to make it the best we can and gain the most we can out of it. After a discussion we have decided to change the font colour to red and black because it makes the title stand out a lot more and also the quote at the top the 'simply' in pink wasn't very legible for the reader

Heres the poster from the old to the new

Third Draft of our Poster

We had to re-shoot our film which meant we needed to take a new photo for our poster because the characters were wearing different clothes to the original photo.

Unfortunately I don't have the image of the poster but you can see what it would look like before being made black and white.

After a lot of anaylising this poster we came to the conclusion we should change some things to make the title stand out more and the quote and the writing on the poster.
We made a creative decision to make the top and bottom of our poster to black and white to make the bush stand out, this was also good because the bush was green and we had green filters in our film so this was synergy between the two things.

This is how the poster looks now....

Second Draft of our Magazine Article

We had to make some small changes to our magazine article because of the change in actors in the film and also because we needed to make it look more like a proper magazine and put the picture in from the new poster

Second Draft for our Poster

Due to having to re-film we also had to re-shoot for our poster again and also we now were using the director of our film Nini Hadjipateras to be the main girl and Kate to be the friend because Nini was now playing the main girl so couldn't take on the role of the film.

These were some of the shots we took for the second attempt for our poster
This photo below was the one we used for our second draft of our poster

First Draft of our Poster

This was the first draft of our poster....

We chose to have the photo along the bottom of the poster to make sure the title stands out and the quote and characters names also are readable and stand out.
We copied the idea of having the word 'Simple' in pink from the boy girl poster where the word 'boy' was in blue and the word 'girl' was in pink. We also did this for the quote above the title to make the 'simply' again stand out from the other words.

Creative Decisions for Filming Classroom Scene

We needed to reshoot the classroom scene because some of the shots didnt work, the only problem was that Nini the main girl didnt have red hair anymore because she was made to dye it back brown.

This put us at a disadvantage because we hadn't finished filming which meant we had to come up with an idea as a group to make it work.
These were the possiblities that we came up with

1) We would film from the outside of the classroom and just hear the noise from the classroom so we couldnt see any of the characters, this might of made an intresting affect

2) We could use another girl who had red hair and film from behind her so we could still see the red hair.

3) We could film from Nini's point of view throughout the whole scene that way we could film it wihout her being seen.

I think the best idea would be the last option because i think it would give a unique edge to our film and i havent seen a whole scene ever filmed from one persons point of view before so this could be quite interesting.

First Draft of Magazine Article

This below was my first draft of the magazine article that i created on the programme Adobe InDesign, i combinded the style of the magazines Empire Magazine and Sight and Sound Magazine to create the layout of it which i thought worked well. We used the same colours from our poster as we did for the magazine article, this was pink and blue which represented boys and girls which was the decision we made from the poster 'It's a Boy Girl Thing' which is the poster below
This is our first draft of the magazine article

Unfortunately this is the edited version of our first draft but you can get the idea of what we were intending to do.

Re-Filming

We had to re-film again hopefully for the last time because unfortunately there was a lot of wind when we filmed so we couldn't hear very clearly when the characters were speaking. We also changed the locations again to make it more interesting and we had Ed with a group of friends instead of on his own.
We had the boys standing around a post box, we also changed the scene of Kate and Nini in the park to back in the bushes to convey to the audience that that is their meeting place.

We also used a camera to capture the sound so garentee that the audience can hear what the characters are saying. Also the character of Ed was changed to another person because Ed was sick for the day we needed him to film

The Other Guy- Woody Holding

Hopefully this time it will work out

The Friend-Kate Shurgia

The Other Guy- Ed Bullock

The Loser- Claudia Humphreys

Change in Cast

We had to re-shoot our film because we wanted our story to have more to it and make it more intresting for the audience. We also had a few problems when we went to edit it because we kept getting the people who were filming in the shot especially in the classrom scene so we had to reshoot the whole film.

Unfortunately Gaby is away for this day so Nini had to take her place and Kate Shurgia is now playing the friend of Nini's.

We have also decided to change some of the location and add some new ones. We have decided that it will start in the bushes with Nini and Kate instead of having them walking towards school. We also have changed where Nini meets the friend after being dumped to at the park near our college because we didnt want it all to take place in college.  Also we changed where Nini goes to find Edd we changed it to the bus stop so it was more intresting.

Idea for Poster and Magazine

We were coming together for ideas for our magazine and poster and we came up with a few ideas-

For the poster we thought that we would have Ryan and I on one side of a brick wall with a big gap inbetween, and Gaby on the other side and have Ryan staring at Gaby and me looking at Ryan.
This would be because we want the audience to see how Gaby is isolated on her own and has no one and how she is the one who lost out in the end.

We want to use the colours and font from the poster of 'Its a Boy Girl Thing' because the colours are young and fun just like the characters in our film

With 'Adulthood' the we liked how the characters were up against the wall and we took this idea and are planning on using it in our film.

For the magazine article we were planning on using the layout of an Empire Magazine and taking bits from the Sight and Sound Magazine such as the credits at the end of the article and where the photo is being placed.

We have chosen to do this style because we didnt want to completely copy an article straight from one of these magazines we wanted to take bits from both and make it more original instead of copying straight from one of the review magazines.

First Day of Filming

Our first day of filming went suprisingly well and we managed to capture all the footage we needed for our film. It was intresting to witness how the much easier filming with multiple cameras was, i thought it would be a lot harder, but once everyone knew their roles and what they were doing it got shot pretty quickly.

The only challenging part was having the cast have to remember the sort of things they said to one another, and also making sure the camera men didnt get in the way of eachother. This was a challenge but i think we got everything we needed which is good.

Characters in our film

There is only a small main cast in our film which allows the audience to engage with the characters on a more one to one basis.
The characters in our film our
Gabriella Kingsley- The Girl
Ryan Howard- Gaby's Boyfriend
Nini Hadjipatera- Gaby's Friend
Claudia Humphreys- The Loser
Edward Bullock- The Other Guy

There are also other characters which dont play a main part such as the extra's in the classroom scene and Craig Winchcombe who is playing the teacher.

Rule of Dogme style filming

There ten rules that any Dogme film must conform to. These rules, referred to as the Vow of Chastity, are as follows:

1.Filming must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found).

2. The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs where the scene is being filmed).

3. The camera must be hand-held. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted. (The film must not take place where the camera is standing; filming must take place where the action takes place.)

4. The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable. (If there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a single lamp be attached to the camera).

5. Optical work and filters are forbidden.

6. The film must not contain superficial action. (Murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)

7. Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to say that the film takes place here and now.)

8. Genre movies are not acceptable.

9. The final picture must be transferred to the Academy 35mm film, with an aspect ratio of 4:3, that is, not widescreen. (Originally, the requirement was that the film had to be filmed on Academy 35mm film, but the rule was relaxed to allow low-budget productions.)

10. The director must not be credited.

Dogme Style of Filming

We have decided to film our film in the style of Dogme, which means not using fancy effects or lighting, no postproduction modification or any other gimmicks. This allows the audience to enagaged with the story more and focus on the actors performance which is the aim of our film.

We have also used mutiple camera technique so we can capture the footage from more then one angle which makes it easier for us to edit it in the editing suit. This is also useful because it means that the characters dont have to remember exactly what they said because when it comes to edit we have it from different angles and the dialogue will flow.

I look forward to filming in this way because i have never done this style of filming before so i am excited to see how it works and what the outcome will be.

Change of plan with our film

We started filming 'The Price of Beauty' but unfortunately due to casting problems and filming difficulties we had to change our idea, this was really upsetting because i was really passionate about shooting 'The Price of Beauty' and really wanted to see it through till the end. We attempted to film just before October half term and this didnt work because we were let down, so we decided to change our idea completely.

We have made our story simpler and more authentic for teenagers, we came up with the idea of a girl cheating on her boyfriend and then to find out he has done the same to her, the audience follow the life of this girl and how her day keeps getting worse and worse.

We decided on this idea because we dont need to write a script for it and it can all be shot freestyle which saved us a lot of time, also the cast could relate because this could of happened to them or someone they know.

This film didnt take too much time to plan because it was complete change to our first attempt and we knew how we wanted to film and what shots we needed.

Casting out characters for our films

Here are the options we looked at for the main girl roles in our films we used a website called http://www.pcrnewsletter.com/pcr/ which is a recruitment website for people who want acting jobs
From this list we have decided to call back two of the girls the first and last girl in the pictures for Naomi, and the first and third girl for Daphne.
Unfortuantely after exchanging a few emails only one of the girls could make it for an audition which we arranged for her to meet us at our college and read a few lines of the script for us.
We did intend to hier her because we were really impressed in the way she performed but she unfortunately never got back to us which left us having to use some one we knew for our cast.

Photos of people we are basing our characters on

For Daphne we decided to choose Victoria Beckham to use to base and dress my character on. This is because Daphne needs to be pretty but only if you looked at parts of her, and we think Victoria matches this because she is stylish and is pretty but she's not stunning and she is too skinny which Daphne is as well.

Naomi is a poor homeless girl but she is a complete contrast to Daphne, she is slender but not too skinny and is naturally beautiful. We have decided to dress her in rags and have her hair matted to convey she's homeless and poor which is shown in an example I used above.

For Philip we thought of using Charles Bartholomew (Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl) just because he dresses the same way I want Philip too, he also has that cheeky attitude that Philip has as well, he also has the gorgeous smile Philip needs to have which melts any girls heart.

Lastly is the shopkeeper who we want dressed in a suit and looks in tip top shape and is well spoken, knows how to deal with customers. Also because he will be an assistant in a jewellery shop we need him to wear white gloves. Here is someone that is an example of how we want him to dress

Planning and Research

This is a snapshot of our script on a programme called Celtx this shows how we highlighted things such as props, characters etc so they became highlighted in different colours to make it easier to follow and read.

This was part of out shooting schedule which shows what characters are needed for what days, what time and which props and crew were needed as well. This really helped us with our organisation and made it a lot easier for us to see what was happening and when.

This was the summary of our scenes, which helped us with seeing how much we needed to get done which gave us an idea of the number of days we needed to shoot to get them all done.

This was our final shooting schedule which we made from working out realistically when we could film the scenes to get them all done in the time we were given.
